The purpose of this worthwhile project is to support the development, implementation and achievement of the United States Agency for International Development’s new Education Strategic Objective: Improved Education of Targeted Jamaican Youth. This is being achieved through three planned intermediate results:
- Improved literacy and numeracy in 71 targeted primary schools
- Improved quality of interventions for out-of-school youth
- Increased stakeholder support for transformational education
In December 2005, Juárez and Associates was awarded a four-year contract as a follow-on to the New Horizons Project (first implemented by J&A in June 1998) in order to assist the Jamaican Ministry of Education to:
- Improve literacy and numeracy in grades 1 to 4 of 71 selected primary schools
- Improve the teaching methodologies and skills used by teachers in schools
- Improve the performance of at-risk and out-of-school youth
- Reduce levels of sub-optimal performance demonstrated by boys
- Increase the support of education by parents, communities and the private sector to achieve education outcomes
J&A is providing assistance in project implementation using on-site professional/technical staff, international consultants and Jamaican education experts.
