What are the main advantages and limitations of the Focus Group Method?
The focus group method has become one of the most used research tools for several important reasons:
- The combined effect of the group produces a wider range of information, insight and ideas than individual or private responses
- One comment often triggers a chain of responses
- Participants may choose to express their ideas and feelings in a comfortable group context when they might not do so individually
- The technique can control the depth of a discussion and allows for flexibility in the topics discussed
- This method speeds up the data collection and analysis process, as several individuals are interviewed at the same time
There are, however, some limitations as to when and how to use focus groups:
- The information obtained from focus groups cannot be used to make statements of statistical significance about the larger target audience
- The value and utility of the research findings depend on the training and experience of the moderator conducting the group, as well as the recruitment process
For these reasons, it is vital that the entire research process, from the design to the moderating and reporting activities, is carefully managed by highly trained and specialized professionals.
